King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud had a vision, and for a simple man, it was a sophisticated idea. He was going to build a world-class graduate research university from scratch in 1000 days, albeit with billions of dollars at his disposal. We were hired, as part of a team put together before the campus was even finished, to craft a communications strategy, build a team with a blend of young Saudis and expats, and develop and implement a community culture embracing global academic standards and practices, and freedoms, while firmly implanting it in an ancient culture unfamiliar with, and often downright hostile to such values. We developed strategies and engagements which enabled this diverse multi-cultural community to come together and build its own new, unique academic world of research and technology. From balancing the often conflicting expectations and styles of a senior management team from Asia, Saudi Arabia and Europe, to reassuring anxious and questioning students from around the globe, we were able to help create an environment which was fertile, nourishing and on its way to global recognition.
